That is the part too many career pieces still slide past. The question is not whether experienced professionals still matter. It is where they matter once drafting, summarising, searching, first-pass analysis, and other once-billable fragments start collapsing into software. One useful way to think about it is this: career resilience now depends less on raw expertise alone and more on workflow position. In plain language, the safer position is increasingly the one that still carries responsibility when the machine is wrong.

That sounds abstract until it lands on a real desk. A lawyer still signs. A physician still explains risk. A consultant still owns the recommendation in the room. An executive still carries the blame if the model-generated memo was neat, fast, and badly judged. What AI is actually removing first
The ILO’s 2025 update on generative AI and jobs offers a calmer baseline than the public mood. One in four workers are in occupations with some degree of generative-AI exposure, but most jobs are still more likely to be changed than erased. Exposure is not the same thing as disappearance.
So the blunt claim that “AI is taking careers” is usually too crude to be useful. Something narrower is happening. The parts of work that are most legible, repeatable, and easy to audit are being compressed first. Drafting moves faster. Research assistants inside white-collar workflows get thinner. Internal preparation gets cheaper. The old billing structure starts to wobble.
The awkward part is that this does not happen cleanly. Institutions bring the tools in before they fully rebuild the process around them. That leaves a strange middle period: faster output, lower-cost preparation, and a lot of uncertainty about what still counts as real contribution. Why seniority still matters, and where it doesn’t
Seniority still matters where work remains ambiguous, relational, or risky. In a clean demo, many tasks look replaceable. In a client setting, a hospital setting, a board setting, or any environment where trust is fragile, the story changes. The value often sits with the person who can absorb the output, see what is missing, and judge what can safely leave the room.
Recent Stanford HAI work on worker preferences found that people mostly want automation for repetitive tasks while still wanting agency and oversight. That is not sentimentality. It is a decent description of how many professional workflows actually hold together.
The same pattern shows up in service firms. The 2025 Thomson Reuters report on generative AI in professional services found that only a small minority said GenAI was already central to workflow, but nearly all expected it to become central within five years. That is not a story about human disappearance. It is a story about workflows being rebuilt around software, with human judgment still sitting at the sharper end.
Where seniority matters less is in the old assumption that years alone protect the role. They do not. Someone can be twenty years into a profession and still be sitting on the most compressible part of the workflow: review that adds no insight, meetings that produce no decision, commentary that sounds polished but carries no real responsibility. That kind of experience has become thinner than many people want to admit.

What compounds now
One lazy answer to all this is “learn AI.” That is too flat to mean much. Plenty of people will learn the tools. The harder question is what compounds once AI literacy spreads. A good answer is: judgment, workflow control, exception handling, and the ability to use software from inside real domain responsibility rather than from the edge of it.
PwC’s 2025 AI Jobs Barometer found that workers with AI skills earned a sizeable wage premium on average. The deeper point sits beneath the number. A premium does not just reward button-pushing. It reflects scarcity, yes, but also the value attached to people who can place AI inside useful work.

If AI makes the routine layer cheaper, margin, influence, and bargaining power drift toward the people and firms that control the client relationship, the proprietary context, the approval chain, or the infrastructure around the workflow. The person doing the first draft matters less. The person who owns the process matters more. Recent Stanford Digital Economy Lab research suggests that early-career workers in the most AI-exposed occupations are under more pressure than older workers in the same occupations. That is not the same thing as system-wide collapse. But it does suggest that the apprentice layer is being hit first.
This matters because many professions depend on those early years to form judgment. A lot of mid-level competence used to come from doing tedious work, then correcting it, then seeing what broke. If software absorbs too much of that too quickly, institutions may save time in the short run while quietly weakening the pipeline that produces future reviewers, partners, principals, and trusted operators.
It is worth balancing that against the broader picture. A recent central-bank research note found no evidence so far that higher AI adoption has reduced overall job postings at the industry or firm level. So the cleaner reading is not mass disappearance. It is uneven pressure, concentrated in certain task clusters and early-career pathways.
That leaves experienced professionals in a strange position. They may benefit in the near term from the thinning of junior competition while also working inside institutions that are making it harder to produce the next generation of real judgment.
